Open a Word document. Select the "HOME" tab and look to the section called "STYLES". For this example, I will create a title heading followed by regular headings. Click on the "TITLE" heading.
Below you can see how the title heading comes out. Notice the line break under the title (nice touch)! Next add headings followed by the body of your text. For this example, I selected Heading 2.
Below is an example of how your document might look at this point.
For the next trick I will teach you, page numbers will be needed. Click on the "INSERT" tab and look to the "HEADER & FOOTER" section. Click on the "PAGE NUMBER" button. For this example, I will select "TOP OF PAGE" and then "ACCENT BAR 2" for the page number style.
**NOTE: This is NOT an example of APA formatting of Page Numbers!!
Once you have the Page Numbers inserted, click on the "REFERENCES" tab. The first button to the far left is the "TABLE OF CONTENTS". Click it and select the table of contents of your liking. For this example, I am selecting Automatic Table 2.
Like MAGIC your table of contents will appear. Word 2007 will only add headings is you followed the directions above for headings. It will not enter plain text.
If your heading titles or page numbers change, click on the "UPDATE TABLE" button. When the dialog box appears select "UPDATE ENTIRE TABLE" and click "OK".
