CRT 205---is it dry or is it me?

Postby lugnut on Nov 21st, 2008, 3:12 pm

Hi everyone,

I'm finishing up the reading for week 1 of my class that starts next week. I did pretty well on the exercises, but it all sorta seems like I'm reading Greek, ya know? I'm 40 years young and consider myself to be half way intelligent, but the material in the class so far kinda bores me . I take my education seriously and am just finding it hard to get into this material. Did anyone else feel the same way? I'm glad I found this site through a friend! I had no idea it existed. Any and all advice appreciated.....

Thanks in advance,

I would say that the class is dry starting out, but it will keep you on your toes by week 5. This class had actually caught me off guard. I think that it is the fallacies that throws everyone off.

Good luck in this class! If I can offer one area of advice it would be read the appendix A. If you follow the setps it lays out, your final will be very easy to complete. I waited until this week and did it all. I found myself having to read back in the text book for a lot of help.

I agree with what Sean has said, the class was rather boring and dry to start out with, but week 5 was definitely a challenge that surprised me. I have been out of the educational system for quite some time, and study habits with the fallacies and argument items was especially critical.

There are also a few items that were of great assistance to me with a few of the weeks in this class that are posted in this forum. The week 5 cheat sheet is a definite "keep close" post as well as some of the off site links that have been posted on here contain great resources to help understand some of these more confusing terms.

Hi! The only advise that I can give you for this class is to put aside more time for this class. It is very time consuming. I ended up in a study group with 4 others in my class. We spent hours each night trying to figure out what we were doing... LOL! It is a challenging class. Now that it has been some time since I have taken the class I look back and laugh. I can remember being up late, pulling my hair out! I passed the class with an A. I guess all of the time and effort paid off. Just make sure that you set aside a little more time for this class is the advise that I can give.

The best advice I can give anyone for CRT205 is to thoroughly explain your answers, especially if you are in doubt about your answer. I've gotten more than a few questions from the exercises wrong, but my explanations were good enough to still earn the full points on the questions. The beauty of critical thinking is that one individual's analysis of an argument can differ greatly from another individual's analysis, yet both individuals will still have a vaild analysis of the argument- to a certain degree, both individuals will be correct. Although critical thinking has its share of absolute concepts and rules, much of it is about individual interpretation and the thought process that leads to that interpretation.
