Would scheduled chat times be helpful?

Postby Jesse on Oct 14th, 2008, 3:34 pm

I was just wondering if having scheduled dates and times for chats would be helpful. Maybe we could set them up by course type? I was thinking that having a set meeting time for members who are in the same course to study together, chat and help each other would be beneficial. What is your opinion on this? Please vote and post your opinions as a reply as well so we can get some feedback.

Funny you ask this! I was going to send you a PM about the chat room; however, I would like feedback from members as well. I don't know that schedualed times would be beneficial. As an alternative, it there away that we could move the chat room onto the home page so that when we sign in, we are automatically enter the chat room. I think that more members will be apt to use the chat room this way.

The only concern I would have about putting the chat right on the home page is that it would cause the members to not be able to browse the site and chat at the same time, by going into the forums or arcade etc. they would leave the page with the chat on it, basically forcing them to either pick chatting or using the site. I like to do both at the same time, but that's just my opinion. Obviously up for discussion :-)

honestly I think that it would still be difficult to manage something like that . If you are interested in chating with people on or about your course PM them and ask what is a convient time for them. With this site still in development phase I think It would be hard to get enough individuals together to do anything but social chat.

Litangel25 makes a good point. As we grow to a larger member base, there well be more members signed in at once, thus making the chatroom meetings occur naturally.

Another option could be adding the chatroom to the board index and then having all "clicks" into the different forum topics open in a new browser; allowing for easier multi tasking. Your thoughts...

I agree, while we are still in the initial "growing" phase, setting up chat times through PM is probably the best alternative. I had thought about doing a chat on home page with new clicks opening in a new window, unfortunately the way the script that runs this site is set is to open default in the same window, if I code it to be different for the forums it will open a new window every time a link is clicked, not just once from the home page.. I can add one off links to things that open in a new window, but with the permissions structure of the site, the forums need to be opened in the same window or someone will end up with 30 browser windows open lol... which could be a few too many.

I will look into alternatives, I could make a "portal" page that has info, the chat, latest posts etc and then have a link to get into the forums, but that would still mean navigating away from the chat... I will toss ideas around in my head and see what I can come up with.
